Dr. Jim Porter

porterDr. Jim Porter is an Associate Pastor at Christ United Methodist Church, Jackson, Mississippi. Jim joined the staff at Christ Methodist in July of 1984 as their Minister of Evangelism. In the thirteen years at that position, he helped to bring in over 3,200 members into the church. Jim has also served as the church administrator. In his roll of Minister of Adult Education, Dr. Porter directs all the adult educational ministries of the church.

Dr. Porter has several academic degrees:

He has taught at Wayne State College, Vennard College and Wesley Biblical Seminary. Jim is currently on the Course of Study Faculty in the Mississippi Conference and an adjunct professor at Wesley Biblical Seminary.

Dr. Porter was ordained in 1973, coming from the Evangelical United Brethren background (we were the ones who united the Methodists). He has pastured churches in Nebraska and Iowa before coming to Mississippi in 1980.

Jim has also been involved in small group ministries. He has worked with Lyman Coleman and the Serendipity conferences. Jim has also worked with Pilgrimage Small Group Ministries (NAV Press) as a leader of small group seminars. He leads Christian Education and evangelism workshops.

Dr. Porter has been involved with missions in Belize. Ten times he has led pastor seminars for the national pastors of Belize. He ha also been to Russia twice working to establish a Methodist Church in Krasnodar, Russia.

Dr. Porter's wife, Beverly Porter, recently retired from being the Academic Dean of Wesley College in Florence, MS. They were married in June of 1968. Jim and Bev have two children: their son, Lauren who is now pasturing the Utica and Carpenter United Methodist churches, and their daughter, Bethany, who is a third year medical student at the University Medical Center.
